But at the core of it all is a custom recovery, and TWRP is by far the most popular choice.

This guide will walk you through the process of flashing TWRP onto your Xiaomi phone. We’ll look at some of the benefits of doing so, as well as the slight differences in the flashing procedure depending on whether you’re running MIUI or HyperOS.

What is TWRP?

The TeamWin Recovery Project, commonly known as TWRP, is a touch-based GUI custom recovery. It allows users to install custom firmware or ROMs, back up existing data, or perform a complete phone wipe, resetting it.

While every phone comes with its own OEM recovery software, which provides basic functionality, TWRP gives unrestricted access to install or update system files that would otherwise be restricted. How to Flash TWRP in Xiaomi Devices?

Before installing TWRP onto your device, you need to make sure you have the following sorted. You will need:

  1. A phone with an unlocked bootloader.
  2. A PC with ADB drivers installed.
  3. A USB cable for connecting your phone to the PC.

  1. Download the SDK Platform Tools by Google.
  2. Extract the downloaded .zip file.

Step 2: Enabling Developer Options

The next step is to enable USB debugging and that involves unlocking any restrictions (Developer options) that might prevent communication with an external device. This is important not only for this process, but also because it allows you to flash a fresh version of the OS via Fastboot in case of a software brick where the device won’t boot normally after flashing TWRP.

  1. Go to Settings and tap on “About Phone.”

Step 3: Check your Phone’s Partition Scheme

Once all the necessary prerequisites are fulfilled, the next step is to check what sort of partition scheme your phone uses. There are two main types of these partitions — A/B and A-only. On the surface, note that non-A/B devices need only flash TWRP once, while the other set of devices must first boot into TWRP and then install the recovery from within the recovery itself.

↪ A/B and Non-A/B (A-Only) Partitions

For devices that support A/B partitions or “Seamless Updates,” it works in a way that the operating system resides in one slot while any new update that needs to be installed does so in the other (inactive) slot. Once the update is successfully installed, the phone boots into the other partition and designates it as the active partition. However, if the update fails, the phone never boots into the other slot altogether.

The other set of devices with A-only partitions have a single recovery partition, whereas A/B devices’ recovery partition is split inside the boot image along with the kernel. This is why you will first need to boot the TWRP image via Fastboot (as you will see later) and then patch the recovery partition, which will install TWRP in both boot_a and boot_b partitions.

  1. Download the Treble Check app from the Play Store.
  2. Launch the app, and go to “Seamless System Updates.”
  3. If the app reads “…and is detected to have an A/B system partition,” then you have an A/B partition, otherwise your devices uses a single A-only partition.

Head on over to TeamWin’s official website, find if your device is listed in the list of supported devices and download the TWRP image (.img) file. Then follow the steps down below:

For this type of partition scheme, you will generally need to flash the recovery only once. To do this follow the steps down below.

  1. Power off your phone, hold the Volume Down + Power buttons until you see the Fastboot screen.
  2. Connect your phone to PC using a USB cable.
  3. Open Platform Tools using Command Prompt or Terminal.
  4. Type “fastboot flash recovery [recovery file name].”
  5. Wait till the flashing process completes. Once you see “Finished,” you can reboot into TWRP by powering off your phone and then holding Volume Up + Power.

For devices using an A/B partition scheme, the installation process is slightly different from the method above. In this case, you’ll not only need the previously downloaded .img file, but also a separate TWRP recovery .zip file.

  1. Download the .zip file for TWRP and store it into your phone’s partition. It is recommended to use an external SD card or an OTG cable with a USB to store this file.
  2. Power off your phone, hold the Volume Down + Power buttons until you see the Fastboot screen.
  3. Connect your phone to PC using a USB cable.
  4. Open Platform Tools using Command Prompt or Terminal.
  5. Type “fastboot boot [recovery file name].
  6. In TWRP, tap on Install > Swipe to confirm flash > Reboot.

Step 5: Rebooting into Recovery

Now that TWRP is installed, there are two ways you can access TWRP. One using ADB and other using the physical buttons on your mobile phone.

  1. ADB: In Fastboot mode, type “fastboot reboot recovery.”

MIUI vs HyperOS Flashing

Flashing TWRP or any other custom recovery onto any phone (not just Xiaomi) follows a similar basic procedure. You essentially use the ADB Platform Tools to flash the TWRP.img file onto your phone’s partition. However, the key difference lies in how Xiaomi’s different operating systems (HyperOS and MIUI) allow you to unlock the bootloader.

  2. Download the Payload Dumper Tool from its official website. This will be a .zip file that will need to be manually extracted.
  3. The extracted folder will contain several files, but our focus will primarily be the payload_dumper.exe file and two folders: payload_input and payload_output.

BONUS: Flashing Root Image File via Custom Recovery

Keep in mind that flashing this .img file using Mi’s stock recovery can render your phone unusable, so proceed with caution.

If you have a custom recovery flashed, such as Orange Fox, TWRP, etc., you simply don’t need to transfer the root image to a PC. This file could be directly accessed via recovery and easily flashed from there.

However, this method isn’t reliable since you would still need a PC. You see, if you root a boot.img file, that file has to correspond to the actual version of HyperOS you’re using, and with updates being pushed out almost every month, using the custom recovery method might not seem as usable as it sounds.

There are two approaches to enabling the Mi Dialer app on your phone. The first option involves switching your phone’s ROM to a region where the app is supported. In this case, we’ll focus on changing from a Global HyperOS ROM to the Indian region.

Our approach will be to present the region change as a software update. We’ll first use Mi’s System Updater app to authenticate the update while still running on the Global HyperOS ROM. Then, during the installation process, the system will switch to the Indian HyperOS ROM.

These steps were verified on a Redmi Note 12 running HyperOS 1.0.4.0. The user interface or sequence of steps may differ on your device due to variations in model, settings, or software version.

Step 1: Downloading the Recovery ROM Files

Firstly, you will need to download the necessary ROM files for installation. There will be two different files required: one corresponding to the exact region your phone is operating in (for authentication), and the other being the ROM you intend to switch to. It’s crucial to note that you should download the Stable ZIP versions of the firmware files, not the Fastboot files.

To download the files, we’ll use MiFirm. The links to the specified files are provided as it’s important that both ROM files for each region are more recent than the one currently installed on your phone. These will most probably differ from the ones replicated in the steps down below.

Step 2: Moving the Recovery ROM Files to Main Partition

Once the files have been downloaded, you’ll find them in the Downloads folder within your internal storage. To proceed with flashing the update, these files need to be copied to the main partition of the internal storage.

  1. From your home screen, open the File Manager app.
  2. On the bottom bar, tap “Storage.”
  3. Scroll down and locate the “Download” folder. Open it.

  5. In the bottom menu, tap “Move.”
  6. Choose “Internal shared storage,” then tap “Move” again to confirm.

In the internal storage, both files will now be used to manually push the update. However, HyperOS does not allow direct firmware updates from one region to another. To bypass this limitation, we’ll need to first authenticate the update using one file (the Global ROM), and then rename the India ROM to the same name to proceed with the update process.

Here’s how to rename the Global ROM:

  1. Long-tap on the Global ROM recovery ZIP file.
  2. In the bottom menu, tap on “More” > “Rename.”

Step 4: Adjusting the Phone’s Settings for Manual Update

Before we begin manually pushing the update, there are a few things to check. The first is to clear the app data for the Updater app, and the second is to change the phone’s region to “United States.” This step bypasses a basic security check that HyperOS performs on the client-end after a specific update file is selected for installation.

Here’s how to clear the app data for Updater:

  1. Go to Settings and select “Apps.”
  2. Choose “Manage apps.”

Once the setup has been completed, we will proceed to the actual part where we manually update the OS to a different region. To do this, we will first need to unlock the option to manually update HyperOS using a ZIP file.

After that is done, we will select the Global ROM. Then, immediately after it starts verifying the files, we will switch to the File Manager and rename the Global ROM to something else. At the same time, we will rename the India ROM to what the Global ROM was named previously.

Here’s how you can unlock the option to push an update manually:

  1. Open Settings and select “About phone.
  2. Tap on the HyperOS logo in the middle of the screen. This opens up the Updater.
