Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 3 Is the Foldable That Samsung Doesn’t Want You to Know About

Xiaomi has just released their latest foldable device, the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold 3, and let me tell you – it’s real good!

The Fold 3 is the successor to the Mi Mix Fold 2, but the reason you probably haven’t heard of this phone is because you can’t buy it. The Mi Mix Folds are China exclusive phones, that, if you want to buy, have to be sourced via a third-party route.

The Mi Mix Fold 3 doesn’t have anything out of the ordinary, but improves upon what was already available in the market. See, it is tested for 500,000 folds instead of Samsung’s 200,000, thanks in part to the new “dragon-bone” hinge design.

This also allows the phone to be hovered in between angles of 45-135 degrees, acting like a tripod when taking photos. The form factor for this one is also an interesting choice, with Xiaomi staying with the good old 21:9.

For the materials used on the backs, Xiaomi gives you two options, either you could go with the common glass back, or the more unusual composite fiber. For either of the two options, the dimensions also vary. The glass model is 10.96mm thick when folded, weighing 259g, whereas the composite is just a tad-bit lighter and slimmer, coming in at 10.86mm (255g).

This is still not enough to beat the HONOR Magic V2 in the “slimmest foldable in the world” category, but it’s practical.

For the internals, Xiaomi has stuck with the top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, coupled up with either 12, or 16 gigs of ram. Interestingly, it comes with a 4,800mAh battery with 67W wired, and 50W of wireless charging.

The choice for the screen is also nothing unique, since Xiaomi has stuck with 1080p for the outer display, and 2K for the inner 8″ display. Both the screens feature a similar LTPO 120Hz refresh rate, with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Talking about protection, the Fold 3 doesn’t have any mention of an IP rating whatsoever, unlike its competitors that commonly feature the IPX8 rating (1.5m underwater for 30min).

For the camera department, Xiaomi didn’t seem to make any compromises. The foldable features a quad-camera setup with not one, but TWO telephoto lenses. The camera setup consists of a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultrawide (120° FOW), a 10MP periscope with 5x optical zoom, and finally another 10MP with 75mm focal length.

Xiaomi has also partnered with Leica, and the company has used the “Leica Summicron” lens for the back glass on the cameras for better light intake. One of the main issues with Xiaomi phones is that they tend to over-process their images. This time around, they’ve announced that the Fold 3 will cut down on this.

As for the front cameras, well, both the inner and the outer screens feature a 20MP selfie shooter, with the inner punch hole cutout being located on the top left-hand side corner of the screen.

The phone, unlike Xiaomi 13 series is fairly decently priced at around ¥8,999 ($1,240) for the 12/256 variant, and ¥10,999 ( $1,515) for the 16/1TB model. The phone is slated to hit the shelves on August 16th, and as a reminder – it isn’t available internationally.
