Fix: Microsoft Outlook Error ‘Not Implemented’
Microsoft Outlook is a very famous email client that lets you manage and send/receive emails from your devices. But the problem that most of the Microsoft Outlook users are facing is that they can’t send or receive emails from the Outlook. Lots of users are seeing an error dialogue with “Not Implemented” message whenever they click the Send/Receive email button from Outlook. This problem won’t prevent you from using the Microsoft Outlook but it will stop you from sending or receiving any emails and, in some cases, prevent you from checking emails as well. As you can imagine, this can be really problematic if you have to check important business emails.
What causes the Microsoft Outlook Not Implemented error?
There are multiple things that can cause this issue. All of these things are listed below
- Microsoft Outlook Corruption: Sometimes software file(s) get corrupted for no reason and this can cause your software to misbehave or cause unexpected error. Corrupted files can also be caused by other programs or Windows Updates as well. Usual solutions for corrupted/damaged files is to replace the files with fresh ones via reinstall or software repair.
- Windows Update: It is pretty common to see Windows Updates introduce a bug in your system and this might simply be that especially if you started seeing the error right after a Windows Update.
- Antivirus: Antivirus applications are known to cause issues with other programs and Windows Update components are no exception. This can happen because of false positives or weird compatibility issues. There are certain antivirus applications that are well known for causing issues like these and the solution is to simply disable the antivirus application.
- Microsoft Outlook Properties: Sometimes the issue might be with the Outlook properties or compatibility settings. Making some changes in these settings can fix the issue.
Method 1: Repair Microsoft Outlook
Since corrupted or damaged files are really common, it is advised to perform a Microsoft Outlook repair before doing anything else. Repairing the Outlook will fix any issues that might be causing this problem. Follow the steps given below to repair Microsoft Outlook.
- Hold Windows key and press R
- Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter
- Locate Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Office and select it
- Click Uninstall/Repair or Change
- Select Repair from the options and follow on-screen instructions
Everything should be fine once the repair is done.
Method 2: Revert Windows Update
Since Windows Updates can introduce a bug in your system, it is generally a good idea to revert any updates that you might have installed recently. The chances of solving your issue with this option is very high if you started seeing the error message right after a Windows Update.
- Hold Windows key and press I to open Settings
- Click Update & Security
- Click View update history
- Select Uninstall updates
- Go through the list of updates installed on your system and keep an eye on the date. Select an update and click Uninstall if the update was installed recently or around the time you started seeing the error. Repeat this for all the recent updates.
Once done, reboot and check if the problem is resolved or not.
Note: You can also revert the update changes by following the steps given below
- Follow steps 1-2 given above
- Select Recovery from the left pane
- Click Get Started link under Go back to the previous version of Windows 10 and follow the on-screen instructions
Method 3: Disable Antivirus
It is usually not advised to allow or integrate your virus scanner with your email client (Microsoft Outlook in this case). Antivirus applications can cause this kind of problems. The usual solution is to disable your antivirus application or disable the integration with Outlook. We will give you the steps to disable your antivirus completely and you can then take the decision depending on whether it fixes the issue or not. Keep in mind that you can just disable the online security or disable email integration of the antivirus if you want. The steps given below are for a general audience that might not be comfortable enough to disable email scans.
- Right click on your antivirus icon from the system tray
- Select Avast Shield control (this option will vary depending on your antivirus)
- Select the appropriate time option for disabling the antivirus. We will advise you to select the Disable Permanently option because Windows Updates usually gets turned off on a reboot. Don’t worry, you can enable the antivirus later on.
- Once done, check for updates and turn on your Windows Update. If everything works fine then perform a reboot of the system and give it some time to see whether the Windows Updates turn off or not.
If everything starts working fine after disabling the antivirus application then the problem is with your antivirus. You can either uninstall the antivirus or add your launcher to its whitelist. Both of these options will work.
Method 4: Change Outlook Properties
Changing some settings from the properties of Microsoft Outlook has resolved the issue for quite a lot of users. So, follow the steps given below to change the properties of Microsoft Outlook
- Close Microsoft Outlook
- Hold Windows key and press E
- Type C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\ and press Enter. Replace Office14 with your Office version. If you can’t find Office in Program Files then try Programs Files (x86)
- Right-click Outlook.exe and select Properties
- Click Compatibility tab
- Uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode for checkbox
- Uncheck Run this program as an administrator checkbox
- Click Apply then select Ok
Open Microsoft Outlook and check if the problem persists or not.
