How to Prevent RE 4 Remake from Crashing on Your PC

The RE 4 Remake often encounters crashes when it maxes out memory usage. This is typically due to high video and graphics settings, particularly when using the Ray Tracing feature.

If your graphics settings are not set to high and you’re still having issues, you may be missing some redistributables required for the game to run smoothly. Let’s delve into the methods that have helped several users resolve their issues.

Before proceeding with other fixes, ensure that your computer meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements for the RE 4 Remake. Running a game on hardware that’s not sufficiently powerful can lead to poor performance and crashes.

1. Turn off Ray Tracing

Disabling the Ray Tracing feature can lower VRAM usage by 1 to 2GB, potentially fixing the crashing issue. Although Ray Tracing enhances realism in games and elevates the gaming experience, it can also lead to increased VRAM usage and subsequent crashes.

During our research, we came across users hesitant to disable Ray Tracing because their high-end GPUs support the feature. If you’re among them, consider reducing the Ray Tracing setting to low or medium, rather than disabling it completely. Should the problem persist, we recommend turning off Ray Tracing entirely.

  1. Navigate to Options > Graphics.
  2. Find the Ray Tracing setting and adjust it.
  3. Set the Ray Tracing option to low or off.
  4. After making the change, the RE 4 Remake should no longer crash. If it still does, turn off Ray Tracing entirely.

2. Reduce the in-game resolution

Higher in-game resolutions place additional strain on your GPU, potentially causing the game to crash if the GPU can’t keep up. The higher the resolution, the more pixels the GPU must produce. If you’re using a resolution above 1440p, consider lowering it to see if that resolves the issue.

  1. Go to Options and select Graphics.
  2. Locate the resolution setting under Presets, lower the resolution, and check if the crashes cease.

3. Delete the in-game progress

According to some players, crashes may occur due to frequent game progress saves. Deleting the in-game progress folder may help resolve the issue. Therefore, it’s recommended to do so before proceeding with further troubleshooting methods.

4. Reset the overclock settings

Improper overclock settings can negatively affect gaming performance and cause hardware overheating, leading to crashes. It’s advisable to reset any overclock settings you’ve applied. Follow these steps to achieve this:

  1. Launch your overclocking application, such as MSI Afterburner.
  2. Use the Reset button to revert the overclock settings to default.
  3. Try opening RE 4 Remake again to see if the issue is resolved.

5. Update the GPU Driver

Outdated GPU drivers may struggle to run high-end games, causing crashes. To resolve this, update your GPU driver.

  1. Access GeForce Experience or AMD Radeon Software.
  2. Visit the Drivers tab and click Check for updates.
  3. Install any available driver updates.
  4. Reboot your computer and verify if the crashing problem has been fixed.

6. Reinstall DirectX and VC Redistributables

DirectX, a suite of APIs crucial for multimedia tasks, particularly in gaming, and Microsoft Visual C++, must be correctly installed for a smooth RE 4 Remake experience.

  1. Download DirectX from its official website.
  2. Run the installer and follow on-screen prompts to install DirectX.
  3. Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
  4. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to access the Programs and Features control panel.
  5. Uninstall all instances of the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables.
  6. Download the all-in-one Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables package from the provided link.
  7. Extract the package using WinRar or 7zip.
  8. Run the Install_all.bat file as an administrator to install all Microsoft Visual C++ versions.
  9. Launch the game to check if the issue has been resolved.

7. Repair the game files

Corrupted game files could be the cause of the crashes. To fix this, try repairing the game files.

  1. Open Steam and go to the Library.
  2. Right-click on RE 4 Remake and select Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files from the left panel and choose Verify integrity of game files.
  4. After the verification process, attempt to run the game.

If you still encounter issues, the final resort is to reinstall RE 4 Remake, which we’ve yet to attempt. Thus, we advise reinstalling the game as a last measure to resolve the problem.
